2013 Running Reflections

I am my own worst critic most of the time so I am taking a moment to reflect on how far I have come in 2013 as a runner.

Its easy for me to put down what I have accomplished this year by saying things like - it was just a half marathon you've run marathon's before. Or it wasn't your fastest 10 mile race ever but I need to stop and look back at where I was January of 2013 to really appreciate that I am now a runner.

So where was I last January. Yes I had run 2 previous marathons, 2 half marathons, a 10-miler and several 10ks but that was all pre-knee injury and prebaby #2. My baby turned 3 this year and my last race prior to 2013 was the Aramco Houston Half Marathon January 2008. Yes 5 years earlier. I occasionally had run a mile or 2 on the treadmill but that was about it. So on January 12, 2013 I went out for a 2.72 mile run in 36:18 minutes. And I was pushing as hard as I could go. 13.21min/mile and I thought I was doing pretty good.

I plodded on with some undocumented treadmill runs for a few months. I have no idea why I wasted beautiful Houston running weather inside on the treadmill which I hate but finally started to hit the streets outside regularly starting April 30th.

Since April 30th minus a few undocumented treadmill runs I have logged 308.6 miles at an average pace of 12:37 min/mile. Including a 5k, 10 miler, two half marathons an a 10k. I had PR's in my 10k and half marathon distance.

Okay so that really is something I should be proud of.

But there is more to it now. Previously I ran to train for a specific race. I trained for the Rock n' Roll marathon in Phoenix in January 2005 and ran the Rock n' Roll half marathon in Va Beach in 2004 under trained as part of my training. I trained specifically for the NYC Marathon in 2007 after having my first baby to have a very disappointing race well off my expected pace and along the way in my training ran my 10 mile PR and previous 10k PR. I added my last half marathon to the season but fighting off the marathon disappointment and an injury at the race I stopped running after that.

Now I am a runner. Now I will get up and run 13 miles on a cold Saturday morning to run with friends and keep my base fitness up even though I am not registered for a race in the immediate future. Now I will get up and run 10+ miles in the cold windy rain because that is what is scheduled. Now I will take a cold shower at the office shower because I need to get a midweek training run in and the hot water isn't working. Now I find joy in running for running sake.

I don't run because I want to lose weight - if anything I have gained weight as I increased my mileage. I don't run so I can say I ran a marathon. I run for me. I run because I find joy in running. I run because my joints hurt less when I run consistently. I run because I feel more energetic when I run consistently. Somewhere in the last 12 months in the last 308+ miles I have become a runner and I love it.

So about those races. My first race was the Run or Dye 5k in Houston on September 14, 2013. It was hot. It was sticky. It was crowded and I was covered in dye. But I ran it with friends and it was fun. Its untimed but I clocked 32:21 for the race. I doubt the distance was truly 5k though because I really don't think I ran that fast. I got dye under my contact at the first color station. But it was fun. My 7 year old daughter enjoyed watching it and she wants to run it next year. That in itself makes it worth it to me.

My next race was the Katy 10 mile race on September 29th.  This was my race for Coral Placement at Disney.  It was hot.  It was very hot.  It was muggy and the few minutes of drizzle were a welcome reprieve from the heat.  Given the conditions (did I mention it was hot) I started out way too fast and struggled at the end but finished with 2:00:58 or a 12:06 min/mile.  Not a PR in the 10 mile distance but not too shabby either.  I learned a few things moving forward and my oldest ran her first 1-mile race.

October brought wet weather to Houston.  On a whim I signed up for the Houston Half Marathon on October 27th.  It was supposed to be a training run but I ended up running a new half marathon PR in a rain soaked/storm delayed half marathon.  I finished at 2:37:47 (12:03 min/mil) and honestly thought I could have gone faster but I pulled up a little in the last 5 miles because I had my big race coming up in 2 weeks.

2 weeks later I ran the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon on November 9th at the Walt Disney World Resort.  It was definitely not a PR race at 2:51:27 (13:05 min/mile) but it was a lot of fun.  How can running with Mickey Mouse there to cheer you on not be fun.

I finished up November with the Katy YMCA Thanksgiving Turkey Dash 10k and another PR on November 27th.  I finished my 10k at 1:06:49.  Both my girls ran the 1 mile kids fun race at Thanksgiving.  Running is becoming a family affair.

So where does that lead me in 2014.  Well I have a great need to run another marathon.  I need a redemption race for NYC in 2007. So I am registered for the San Antonio Rock n' Roll Marathon on 12/7/2014.  I have a few months before serious training for that race will kick off.  Until then I might throw in a half marathon like the Rhythm and Blues 1/2 Marathon in Houston on February 9th, 2014.  My oldest wants to run the Run or Dye 5k this year so I will run that with her on May 31st.  We'll see how the year shakes out.

But until then I do have my newest toy to train with along with some fun new running clothes.  Santa was good to me this year.

Good luck with your fitness goals in 2014!

Katy YMCA Turkey Dash 2013

Happy Thanksgiving.

Is there a better way to start of Thanksgiving than with a Turkey Trot?  Over the years I've run a few Turkey Races.  We used to drive down to the Galleria for the Turkey Trot.  Last year we ran part of one at Bonnet Creek on our trip to Disney World.  This year since we now live in the Katy area we decided to do the Katy YMCA Turkey Dash.  The girls were registered for the 1 mile kids run, I was registered for the 10k and James was registered for the 1 mile fun walk but he planned on doing his mile with Alice in the kids race.

It was a very chilly morning for this Houstonian.  I'm not used to temps in the low 30's anymore.  At least the sun came out and it wasn't rainy and windy anymore.  The kids 1 mile run started the festivities off at 7:10 am.  We wanted to make sure we could get a parking spot, so we got to the YMCA early (around 6:30) parked and went inside to use the facilities and try to stay warm for a little bit.  As we were waiting Mr. Turkey came by and Alice got a big hug.  I had a hard time getting a picture of the elusive Mr. Turkey however.

But I did manage to get a great picture of my girls.

We went out to get lined up around 6:50 or so.  I was thrilled that they decided to do a staggered start for the kids races (5-6 grade first, followed by 3-4 grade, 1-2 grade and last K and pre-K).  It would have been even better if they set up areas for each grade to line up as there was some confusion at the start.  I left Megan to run with the 1-2 graders and Alice with Daddy to run with the pre-K group (she's 3) and found a spot to go try to take some pictures.

There were a lot of kids lined up at the start of the race.  They did a gun start for each group.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a picture of Megan at the start but I did get a picture of the elusive Mr. Turkey running with the 1st and 2nd graders

Then the little kids were off and running.  Alice had a little bit of a slow start but as soon as she got her picture taken she was off and running.

As soon as James and Alice passed by I went to the finish to try to get a good spot to watch Megan run by.
She finished with a time under 11:30.  I walked her out of the shoot and got back to the finish line just tin time to see Alice cross with Daddy.  Apparently she ran the entire thing stopping only to wait for James to catch up with her.  :)
And there is my cutie showing off her medal.  I can't believe I didn't get a picture of both girls post race with their medals.  I was in a hurry to make it to the 10k start line on time however.

James took the girls to go play and explore all the booths while I went out to run.  I'm not sure how long they lasted as they were in the warm van when I finished but I hear they had fun eating ice cream, pop corn and playing on bounce houses.

I lined up for the 10k and thought I was going to have another phone fail as I couldn't get my headset to pair at first but a quick restart before the starting gun and I was good to go with about 1 minute to spare.

I decided to do the 10k with 3 minute run and 1 minute walk intervals and for the first time I was good and stuck to my intervals from the beginning.  I still started out a little fast and finished the first mile in 10:12.

Between mile 1 and 2 my shoe started bothering me.  My toes felt so weird.  It could have something to do with them feeling frozen but it also felt like the toe box dropped off under my toes.  I know that makes no sense but it is the best way I can describe it.  I was certain I would be returning my shoes at that point.

I finished the 2nd mile in 10:32 minutes and was actually starting to feel a little warm.  I debated removing a layer but decided to hold off.  We turned the corner and approached our first water stop.  They had the mile 3 sign right at the water stop and at the time I was convinced that couldn't possibly be right.  I think it was closer to 2-1/2 miles than 3 and the map confirmed that later.  Mile 3 was a fast mile at 10:19.

My toes started to thaw out on mile 4 but at least the weird toe box thing seemed to have gone away.  I slowed down a little in miles 4 & 5 and had my 2 slowest miles at 10:53 and 10:52/mile.  I know at one point my music stopped randomly for about 5 minutes and that effected me more than I would have thought.
Once I finished mile 5 I knew I just had 1.2 miles to go so I was feeling really good about a good time.  I picked up the pace a little and finished the last 1.2 miles in (1.33 according to the GPS) in 14 minutes
and 1 second for an average speed of 10:33.

My official time was 1:06:26 - which is a new personal best.  I finished 684/882 overall and 330/447 females and 68/92 Females 35-39.

I grabbed a banana and some water.  Stopped by the Galloway booth for a minute and then met James and the girls at the van so we could leave.  We went home, got cleaned up and went to see Frozen which was an awesome movie.

All in all it was a low key kind of Thanksgiving but I was thrilled with my race.

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.  Next run is 5 miles on Saturday morning.

11 Very Cold Miles

I was reminded on Saturday morning that I am officially a Houstonian now.  You wouldn't think I'd need this reminder after having lived her for almost 10 years now but apparently every once in a while I still do.  How was I reminded of this you may ask?  I was reminded because I was freezing on my run Saturday morning.  I don't think I would survive up north any more.

I debated all week if I was going to run on Saturday or not.  I wasn't sure if I was up for it yet but Friday morning I emailed my pace group leader and committed myself to the 4 am start time.  Yes I said 4 am on a Saturday morning when I'm not officially training for any race right now. So I awoke at 3 am to get ready for my run.  It was ~ 42 degrees, dark and misty with winds of 15 mph.  I debated long and hard what to wear and figured I'd warm up once we started running so I put on my sparkle skirt and short sleeved shirt.  I put on my new Wine & Dine long sleeve Tech shirt and at the last minute I put on my pants.  I honestly figured I'd leave them in the car.  I completely forgot to grab my hat and my gloves.  The pants did not come off and I could have used another layer or two.

It took me longer than normal to get started on Saturday morning and I ran out of time and didn't get my contacts in.  I hate running in my glasses but running in the cold with my glasses was definitely not fun as they kept fogging up when we would run into the wind.

I wore my old running shoes because the new ones pinched my pinkie toe on my right food on Thursday night and I didn't want to risk in on a long run.

We ran just under 11 miles and kept a nice 13 minute pace for the run.  It felt good to be out there.  My legs weren't fresh but the run was good.  I liked the pace and would be happy with that kind of training pace for our long runs every week.

It took me forever to defrost after the run.  A hot shower didn't even really help.  I have a feeling there will be some grumbling by the family on Thursday for our early morning Turkey Trot if the cold temperatures keep up.  The weather forecast calls for it to be clear but colder than it was Saturday.  Brrrrrr.

I need to try out the new shoes again and see if it was the socks or if it is the shoes.  If its the shoes i need to bring them back to Luke's and try something different.

New Shoes = New Motivation?

Its been 12 days since the Disney Wine & Dine Half marathon and I will admit I am having a hard time getting my feet back under me (literally).  Some of it is probably due to the post race blues.  I've also been a little under the weather and trying to give my ankle a break as I can still feel a little pain in the tendon area.   I was going to join the Katy Galloway group Saturday morning for a 6 mile run but woke up in the morning feeling sick and decided that since I do not have a race pressing that sleep was a better option.

But it was time for some new running shoes.  I start to notice my shoes breaking down a little between 250-300 miles.  I know that isn't a ton compared to some but I can definitely feel it.  I also tend to shift my old running shoes to my new walking shoes so I like them to have a little wear left on them.  Plus there is something to be said about jump starting the motivation by having a new pair of shoes to break in.  :)

Getting my new shoes proved to be more difficult than I would have expected.  I put my current shoes in my car (Brooks Ghosts) on Tuesday morning so I could bring them with me.  At lunch on Tuesday I hop in my car and attempt to head to Luke's Locker in River Oaks.  Attempt is the key word.  It took me 30 minutes to get from my office to the light in front of Target which is less than a half a mile away.  I typically walk to that target from my office in less than 10 minutes so it was very frustrating.  At that point I gave up and drove back to the office because I no longer had time to get shoes before my afternoon conference call.

I tried again today with more success.  It still took longer to get to River Oaks than it should due to the lovely train and construction on San Felipe but I did make it.  Jorge took good care of me.  I tried on the new Brooks Ghosts but it felt weird on my toe box (which didn't really surprise me because I had been having issues with my toes in my current shoes).  I tried on a few other shoes and settled on Saucony Ride 6's.  I have 30 days to try them out so if they bother me I can bring them back and switch back to the Brooks or something else.

My other attempt to improve motivation is to set my race calendar and start working on training schedules.
I have decided that my next half marathon will be in Houston February 9th for the Rhythm and Blues Half Marathon.   http://rhythmandblueshalfmarathon.com/

I also think I have decided on my next full marathon (my last full marathon was in 2007 in NYC so its been a while).  I think I am going to run the Rock n' Roll Marathon in San Antonio on December 7, 2014. http://runrocknroll.competitor.com/san-antonio The timing is perfect.  Weather in December should be pretty nice in San Antonio (although like all of Texas you never know) plus the longest training runs won't be in the worst parts of Houston summers (20 mile runs in August/September don't sound appealing).  It is within driving distance so the family can come out and we can make a weekend of it in San Antonio and relax on the Riverwalk.  I really don't want to travel to a full marathon by myself as I don't trust myself to make it back to the room/home afterward and would want a driver.  The other reason that the RNR San Antonio works out is it would give me 2-1/2 months to recover and then ramp up for the Disney Princess Half Marathon in 2015 that I am hoping to run with my sister.  One other benefit to RNR over say the Houston Marathon in January is that the time limit is 7 hours vs 6 hours.  I really want to train and run in 5-1/2 hours or less but my last 2 marathons were over 6 hours so I'd like a little buffer to make sure I officially finish and get my medal.

Now I get to tweak my training schedules and plan my events and hopefully find enough motivation to lace up those new shoes and hit the pavement tonight.

Recovery Time

After the half marathon Disney Weekend and travel I took a few days off for a little recovery time.  Last night I decided it was time to try a little light running so I threw on my running clothes and took the to the treadmill while I waited for my oldest daughter to take her dance class.  I'm really not a huge fan of running on a treadmill and avoid it when possible but on dance nights it is easier to get a short run in while I wait (if I don't have my 3 year old with me that is) than to wait until later in the evening to do it.  I'd rather go outside and run, but I got in trouble for leaving the YMCA while my daughter was in class a couple months ago, so now I either try to have my husband along or run on the treadmill.  There are a couple of benefits of a run at the YMCA on the treadmill though.  For instance I was able to watch Thursday night football on ESPN while running and since the treadmill is very high tech and has the ability to automatically switch between interval speeds I didn't have to worry about interval timing.

When I say I can watch TV on the treadmill I should clarify that this isn't a TV up in the air across the room, this is an individually controlled TV in the dashboard of the treadmill (Like I said a very high tech treadmill) so I can actually watch Georgia Tech football on TV in the middle of Texas.  Unfortunately I think the Georgia Tech football team forgot to travel to Death Valley to play last night so it was a frustrating experience.

I always have a very hard time finding my stride on a treadmill and the perceived effort for the same time and distance is always harder on the treadmill.  I did an easy 2.5 miles in the ~30 minutes I had to run.  The good news is it was pain free unless you count the fact that it was painfully slow.

I've pretty much decided on my next half marathon. I think I'm going to sign up for the Rhythm & Blues Half Marathon in Houston on February 9th, 2014.  3 months between Half Marathon's sounds pretty good to me.  Maybe I can beat 2:35 in February.  I'll work on a training schedule to get me there in the next week or so.  For now I have a 6 mile run with the Katy Galloway Training Group on Sunday and I'll go from there.

Wine & Dine Weekend Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts

I had a great Half Marathon Weekend.  I would definitely do another Run Disney event but I’m not sure if I would pick Wine & Dine as that event.  I think I will stick to morning races for anything longer than a 10k from now on. Night races are really hard on my body physically.  I’m also just not a fan of the Food and Wine Festival, so it isn’t a big draw for me.  I would love to do the full marathon or the Princess Half and I would also like to go Coast to Coast at some point.
It was also fun to have a weekend to be completely selfish and do what I wanted to do at Disney.  There is no way I would have tried this crazy plan with the kids. With that said as much fun as I had it is so much more fun to be at Disney with the family and can’t wait for our next adventure.

Moving forward my next race is a 10k Turkey Trot at the Katy YMCA on  Thanksgiving morning.

Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend - the Day after

Sunday, November 10, 2013 – A second marathon of sorts
Considering how exhausted I was you would think I would sleep in for a long, long time.  That was not the case.  I woke up before 7am again after a total of 3 hours of sleep.  I couldn’t sleep anymore, needed a soaking bath and food.  I was starving.  This required getting up and dressed and leaving the resort.  I had a craving for a Mickey Waffle with Strawberries.  I looked up nearby resort counter serve restaurants that showed waffles and ended up at the Art of Animation Resort.  They didn’t have strawberry syrup but they did have strawberries.  Also the waffles weren’t Mickey shaped they were character coins instead.  It was decent.  It didn’t completely hit the spot but it was good enough.

After I ate I decided to go to Downtown Disney to get in some shopping.  Of course I ended up parking at the wrong end of Downtown Disney (this is pretty much always the case for me) so I got in a nice walk to stretch out my legs.  I did some shopping and grabbed a sandwich at Earl of Sandwich.  I was underwhelmed after hearing such high praise of it.  It was okay but not great.  Maybe my taste buds were still off from the run the night before, but it didn’t have a lot of flavor to it.  I had their original sandwich.
After I got my sandwich I took the long walk back to my car.  Somewhere along the way I had a crazy idea that since I missed getting a finish line photo with my medal, I should go take my picture with my medal at all the parks I ran through the day before so I went back to the resort to pack my park bag and change clothes.

First Stop Animal Kingdom
I drove to Animal Kingdom.  I’m not sure how, but I got directed to AAA Diamond parking.  I’m not sure if this was a good thing as I ended up walking from the car to the entrance instead of taking the tram.  I stopped first and got my picture in front of the Christmas Tree.

I entered the park with my new RIFD enabled Annual Pass Card which was very easy.  I had my picture taken in front of the tree of life and headed back to Kali River Rapids and Expedition Everest.  I grabbed a Fast Pass for Kali figuring that it would be available when I was doing at Everest.  I forgot all about the single rider line.  I went into single rider and pretty much walked onto Everest.  (I love single rider lines when they are available and I’m by myself).  Then I went back to Kali and instead of waiting for my FastPass, I jumped into the standby line which was listed as 30 minutes.  There was no savings for FastPass as it was a walk on until after the meet up point.  I doubt the line took longer than 15 minutes.  I didn’t bother with my jacket because the weather was nice and I had my tech skirt and shirt on so I knew they would dry quickly.

After Kali I walked by the new meet and great place for Mickey and Minnie and there was pretty much no wait so I figured I could hop in line and get a picture with my medal and Mickey and Minnie in their Christmas wear.  As a side note, wearing your medal in the park is a lot of fun.  Everyone congratulates you, the Characters pay special attention to you and my favorite was the bag check guy who told me he heard Goofy was giving out post-race massages.  J With pictures complete I headed back to the car to go to Epcot.

Stop # 2 Epcot

It might be Sunday but it was still the last weekend of Food and Wine and Epcot was still a nightmare.  I arrived and parked at Wonder 95 and again took the Tram to the entrance.  After I got in, I had a picture taken at the entrance and then went over to Test Track.  Test Track was still under refurbishment last Thanksgiving and the line/FP return was way too long when we went after the cruise last spring.  Test Track also has single rider so into the single rider line I went.  I didn’t make my car which I should have.  I somehow didn’t realize that each rider could put a car in and have it tested.  I like test track.  I will admit I like Radiator Springs a lot more (which is the same ride system) but Test Track is fun.  I walked around towards the entrance to World Showcase and was again overwhelmed by the crowds.  So I had a picture taken with Spaceship Earth behind me and started to exit the park.  As I was exiting I noticed that the Character Spot had no wait so I went and had my picture taken with Mickey, Minnie and Goofy.

Stop # 3 Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios was my original plan for the day.  I wanted to watch Fantasmic! and spend some time exploring the Osborne Lights section.  It was still early in the afternoon when I arrived at Hollywood Studios so I had some time to play before Fantasmic! started.  I parked in Goofy’s Film 27 and took the tram to the Entrance.  I had my picture taken with the Sorcerers’ Hat behind me and headed down Sunset Blvd thinking I could try the Single Rider Line at Rockin’ Roller Coaster.  Unfortunately the single rider line was about 40 minutes so I decided to pass.  The 4:15pm Beauty and the Beast show was getting ready to start so I decided to watch it.  I’ve seen it before but it is a fun show and well done.  It doesn’t compare to the Broadway stage version but it is still a great show and I was able to sit down for a little bit.
After Beauty and the Beast I walked over towards Star Tours.  I hadn’t ridden it since the refurbishment a few years ago to 3D.  I normally don’t really like motion simulators but I really enjoyed this ride and it didn’t make me feel sick.  I can’t see 3D so I just kept one eye closed and had no problem with it.  There was no wait for the ride.  I walked straight to the FastPass join spot without having to stop.  I’m sure people with FP+ then were thrilled to have used that FP+.
After Star Tours I walked over to Pizza Planet to get some dinner.  I had a salad and pizza for dinner and then walked back to the Theater under the Stars to get ready for Fantasmic!  I had a great seat about ½ - ¾ of the way up right next to the aisle between stand by and Dining package.  I hadn’t seen Fantasmic! in about 13 or 14 years as I know it was before I met my husband when I met some friends at what was then MGM for the day when I used to live in Florida.  It was fun.  Now that the girls are older I think they would both enjoy it the next time we make it to WDW.
After Fantasmic! it was time to go over to the Osborne Lights!  I love the lights.  They make me happy.  I had my picture taken in a couple of places along the lights, looked for hidden Mickey’s, watched the Dancing lights several time and just walked up and down enjoying the lights.  It was at this point that I realized that I still had time to make it to the Magic Kingdom for the fireworks if I wanted.  Why not hit all 4 parks and DTD in one day.  Its already been a crazy day and I doubt I would ever do something like this again as I don’t buy park hopper tickets and I would try it with the kids.

Final Stop – The Magic Kingdom
So I left Hollywood Studios (after another picture on the way out) took the tram back to my car and drove over to the Magic Kingdom.  I parked on the Heroes side this time (Simba 27) and took the tram to the TTC.  The express Monorail was pulling up when I got there so I ran up the ramp and got on just before they closed the door.  Life is going great until we get a traffic stop on the monorail line.  Fortunately it didn’t last long and we still beat the Ferry (just barely but we did beat it).  I stopped about midway down Main Street to watch the projection show (I was surprised it was exactly the same as the one at the Christmas party I would have thought they would be different) and Wishes.  After Wishes I debated sticking around for the parade but decided to stop in Emporium for one last gift and head back to the resort as I still had to pack and my flight left at 6:40am the next morning.  I followed the herd out of the park (I bet most of the people leaving with me were resort guests too who were eligible for EMH who left before 10pm).  I made the first Ferry and took the tram back to the car and left the Magic Kingdom behind for this trip.

Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend - Race Day

Saturday November 9, 2013 – Race Day!

I woke up on my own before 7am after about 5-1/2 hours of sleep.  So much for sleeping in I guess.  So I got up and got dressed, stopped for breakfast and a few things at Publix and then headed over to the Expo to pick up my bib, race packet and explore the booths.  I got my race packet and was able to get my corral changed to F based on my half marathon time 2 weeks previously.  I was expecting corral G so I was surprised with the upgrade to F.  I then went over to the other building for my shirt and the rest of the expo booths. The shirts were huge.  I had to go to the shirt exchange for a smaller size.  They were also long sleeve which is nice, but there are very few runs in Houston where I would wear a long sleeve tech shirt, so I went to the Run Disney Booth and bought a short sleeve event tech shirt in Orange, a magnet for my cubicle and a Wine & Dine pin.  I had fun exploring the rest of the expo, talking with other runners and looking at all the booths.

After I left the Expo I headed over to the Boardwalk for my very first Disney Meet up – this was sponsored by http://takingthefloridaplunge.com/ and was a lot of fun.  I got to meet my wonderful TA Christine (owner of Magical Mouse Plans Travel Agency www.magicalmouseplans.com) in person along with a bunch of other runners.  I also got to meet Rod from http://wdwmousenger.com/ and Megan from  http://www.runnersguidetowdw.com/  I even won a copy of the Runners Guide to WDW as part of the door prize.
I'd never been to the Boardwalk before so it was nice just to look around a bit.  I was honestly trying to take it easy today but my feet were already telling me otherwise with all the walking around the Expo and standing at the meet and greet they were starting to hurt a bit.  After the meet and greet ended it was time to try to figure out something to eat for lunch.  I needed to deal with an issue with my annual pass and we were right next to the boat dock to Epcot so I figured a quick trip to Epcot Guest Service would work and I could get some food in Epcot.  That was a mistake.  Epcot in the afternoon on the last Saturday of the Food and Wine Festival, plus the Wine and Dine half Marathon weekend, plus Veteran’s Day weekend meant Epcot was a zoo.  The Guest Service line at the International Gateway was insanely long so I entered the park and walked to the front of the park to the other Guest Services area.  The line was 50 deep out the building so I didn’t stop.  I also didn’t stop for food.  I love Epcot but I really am not a huge fan of the Food and Wine Festival in general and today in particular.  There were just too many people and the whole area smelled like an over packed drunken bar (and this is outside).  So I left and took the boat back to the Boardwalk.  I went into the Bakery to get a sandwich but realized after I was in line that they were premade sandwiches.  I should have left to find something else, but ended up getting a kids mac and cheese instead.  This was really not a good prerace food option.  After I ate it really was time to go back to the room and attempt to take a nap and at least rest my feet for a while.
I got back to the room and found napping to be impossible and resting was difficult as well.  I did take a nice soak in the huge jetted tub to rest my feet for a bit and watched some college football.  I wanted to get an early dinner to try to give it time to digest before the race so I headed out about 5:00 or so to find some dinner.  I got a grilled chicken Parmesan sandwich from Burger King and picked up some apple slices and pretzels (my standard pre long run food) from the grocery store before heading over to Epcot to get ready for the race.
As I pulled up to Epcot I saw a sign that says Epcot Parking lot is full and I start to panic slightly.  I ignore this sign and head into Epcot anyway.  They saw my runners bib and I didn't even have to show my Annual Pass to enter and park (I don’t think free parking started yet as it wasn’t not yet 6pm, but it was close to it).  I parked in Discovery 24 and took the tram to head to the park.  I went into the park to try to fix my Annual pass issue again and again I enter with my bib and bracelet and don’t have to use my pass.  I got a picture prerace in front of the Food and Wine sign and walked over to Guest Services.  I was able to get my annual pass converted to RIFD card from the old paper card without difficulty and I left the park to head to the bus.  I asked as I was leaving the park which way to go for the Race Buses and was pointed towards the Resort Bus area.  As I get there I ask the first transportation guy where the buses to the race start are and he tells me they didn’t tell them, but he thinks it is by the finish line tents and he had sent a bunch of other people that way and none had come back complaining yet.  The finish line tents are in the Imagine lot which is about as far away from where I was as you could get.  They should have had trams running to take you to the bus lot. It was a very long walk carrying your gear check bag to the buses (the gear check bag is just awkward to carry – the straps were either too long or too short to make carrying it comfortable).  I finally made it to the buses around 6:30 or 6:40.  As we are boarding they say they aren’t supposed to pull out until 7 so I’m anticipating sitting there for a while.  We ended up pulling out around 6:45.  I was glad because sitting on buses makes me nauseous.  Something about the exhaust smell, the vibration at the crowds but I never feel good sitting on a bus like that.  I was very happy to get to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
The prerace area was great.  We got off the buses and there were 4 lines forming, one each for Chip & Dale, Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse and Goofy.  There was a big screen TV with a great DJ playing lots of fun music and getting everyone dancing, the gear check area was open and easy to get into and out of it.  They had water tables, lots of port-a-potties and plenty of space.  I immediately got into line for Minnie Mouse and had my picture to Minnie.  They I moved over to Chip & Dales line.  After that I got into Mickey’s line (which was very long at this point) and had fun partying in line with the DJ while waiting.  It really was a party atmosphere.

As I was waiting in line I was reading Twitter and saw that @RunDisney re-tweeted a picture from an old high school friend.  What a very Small World we live in indeed.  I sent him a tweet telling him I was there too.  He sent me his location and after I finished my picture with Mickey I went to bag check and then off to find him.
At this point I made my biggest mistake of the day.  In my planning for the race I had my spare phone battery “fully charged” so I could switch it out prerace.  So before I dropped off my bag I pulled out the spare battery and went to switch them out.  I was not smart enough to check the battery before dropping off my bag and did a double switch in the dark (after I’d dropped the battery on the ground) and put the old battery back in my phone.  I didn’t realize this until after my bag was long checked with no way to retrieve it.  My phone held my intervals, my GPS tracking/pace times and my play list if I needed some motivation or inspiration along the run.  I had a whole new set of challenges ahead of me that I had not anticipated as I was going to be running this race now without a working phone.  One good thing was they did have spare bags at bag check.  The bag I had started to split from the top so they gave me a new one otherwise I have a feeling my stuff might not have stayed in the bag.

The line near bag check for the port-a-potties was 50-75 deep in front of each pair.  There were 2 more banks of port-a-potties on the other side of the field with no one in line, so I took a quick stop and then found my friend Mike from high school.  It was fun to meet up with him and catch up for a bit.  I hadn’t seen him in probably 14 years when I went to a show he and his then band was playing in Florida.
In what seemed like no time at all had passed since I had arrived at the prerace area they were calling us to move into the corral areas.  I got back in the port-a-potty line (it was much longer now) for that just in case stop before the race and then moved to Corral F.  I met some nice girls in the corral and we talked as we waited for the race to start.  I saw a Galloway pace sign and got excited thinking I could fit in when them since I didn’t have my phone for intervals but the sign said 2-1 intervals with a 3 hour anticipated finish.  That was much slower than I planned on and I was trying to figure out how a 3 hour anticipated finish was in Corral F since that was supposed to be a better than 2:30 finish.  They still had good music and entertainment in the corral areas so the final 30 minutes passed quickly (although I would have rather been sitting down at some point.  I realized as I was waiting for the race to start that I had now been standing for over 3 hours and my legs were already starting to feel tired).
The corrals were let go every 2-3 minutes and each corral had its own countdown and fireworks. That was a nice touch and a lot of fun.  Mickey and Minnie were also at the start to wish us well. We were scheduled to cross the start line around 10:12 pm and I suspect we started fairly close to that time.  I started the stop watch feature on my watch (the only thing it does have) and hoped for the best.

For the first 5k you are running along Osceloa Parkway from ESPN towards Animal Kingdom.  It is dark and there isn’t that much entertainment in this stretch of the course but I was still feeling pretty good here so it wasn't that big of a deal.  I was doing a lot of instant math to keep track of where I should be each mile to try to stay on track for my pace and trying as best as I could to run 3-1 intervals evenly by just looking at the stop watch.  It takes a lot less effort to follow the beeping signals than what I was doing but it was really the best option available to me without my phone (yes I am planning to get a GPS watch for Christmas - I'm open to suggestions).  There was a decent hill (for this Houstonian that is) up the overpass just after the first mile but this stretch was pretty straight and a little boring).  They did have 2 character stops along here (but I didn’t stop) one for the Country Bears and another for the characters from Fantasia.  I finished the first 5k at 36:09 (11:40 min/mile pace) which is pretty close to what my goal for the race was but I had a feeling very early on that this wasn't going to be a PR.
At the 5k mark you make a curve up the overpass ramp towards the Animal Kingdom parking lot and it was a very steep embankment.  With my ankle issues earlier in the week I could definitely feel this embankment. Around the 3.5 mile mark, the course narrows significantly as you enter into Animal Kingdom which makes it feel a bit more crowded again.  The course takes you to the left of the tree of life, into Africa up the hill towards Expedition Everest (which somehow I didn’t see when I was running, I think I was just so focused at that point that I forgot to look up), past the Finding Nemo show, by the big Dinosaur and out of the park through a back exit, and around the parking lot.  There were a lot of characters out in Animal Kingdom (again I didn’t stop) and there was a stage with some Little Mermaid  float and stuff set up in the parking lot.  There was also a huge Pirate Ship with Jack Sparrow and Barbosa outside in the parking lot as well.  That was cool to see.  Around mile 5 there was a sprinkler that had broken and the path was covered with water.  This was right before a water stop so I let some cast members know about it even though I figured they did.  It was definitely a safety hazard and a lot of people were trying to avoid it in the grass etc.  We exited the Animal Kingdom Parking Lot through the parking lot entrance (please watch for speed bumps) right before the 10k mark.  I crossed the 10k mark at 1:14:39 which was now 12:04min/mile average pace.  I could definitely feel myself slowing down in Animal Kingdom partly due to the narrower course and hills and partly just due to tired legs.  I knew a PR wasn’t going to happen but I was still feeling pretty good at this point.
Disney has a rolling race close of 16min/mile pace starting when the last person crosses the start line.  These are the balloon ladies.  As we came around near the 10k mark you could see the balloon ladies.  I was amazed at the number of people behind them before the 5k mark.  They were already pulling people at the 3 mile mark.  I know things happen and you can fall behind your pace but if I didn’t think I could stay ahead of the balloon ladies at least through the 5k mark, I’m not sure I would have started, but that is just me.
We headed back up the Osceola Parkway. Around the midway mark they had a video board showing the post-race party in Epcot.  I have to say that really didn’t inspire me.  Right at mile 7.5 we turned left up a big ramp onto World Drive and towards Hollywood Studios.  We ran past the Green Army men ordering us to keep it moving and finally around mile 9 into Hollywood studios.  At the water station right before mile 9 and right before we entered into Hollywood studios I made the mistake of grabbing a cup of PowerAde.  The PowerAde did not agree with me at all and within a quarter mile my stomach started cramping.  I hit the 15k split at 1:54:03 a 12:26min/mile average pace (yes I was getting even slower).

We entered Hollywood Studios behind Tower of Terror right next to the Rockin’ Roller Coaster.  We then ran up Sunset Boulevard around the Hat, through Pixar Place (where I stopped for a bathroom break) past Toy Story (Buzz and Woody were out) and you get a quick glimpse of the lights before we turn right through some back lot places including the Disco tunnel (this is really part of the back lot tour where they have windows set up with props, costumes, etc. but they had a big Disco ball going and lots of music.  It was fun but the air felt a little stale in here) and past some very stinky garbage then we went past the back side of the Lights Motor Action Stage and suddenly you are in the middle of the Osborne Lights.  That was definitely a wow moment of the race.  The lights are wow to begin with but running through it was just beautiful. We exited the lights and passed StarTours and Indiana Jones before exiting the front of the park around mile 10-1/2 or so.  At the front entrance I managed to step funny on a planter ring around one of the trees.  I sort of half caught the squishy part and the concrete sidewalk and almost fell.  I did twist my ankle a little bit and stopped to make sure I wasn’t hurt.  I seemed okay other than the nagging cramps but I kept pressing along. We ran down by the Boardwalk, Swan and Dolphin, Beach and Yacht Club Resorts.  This is the first time you really had a bunch of spectators on the course (other than cast members) cheering because it is the first accessible portion of the course.
Just past mile 12 we entered Epcot through a backstage entrance near Figment.  There were a lot of people lining the course in Epcot.  At this point I am not feeling well at all.  The cramping is much worse, I am plodding along and smell of alcohol (worse than earlier in the day at the Food and Wine) was not helping.  We went through Innovations and the Character Spot and out around to the Right of Spaceship Earth.  I was so focused at getting to the finish line that I didn’t even look up to see Space Ship Earth.  We exited the park and approached the finish line in the Imagine Lot.  Mickey and Minnie were at the Finish Line and I got a high five from Mickey as I approached the line.  Seeing them gave me just a little extra motivation to get through the last .1 miles or so.  I crossed the finish line at a chip time of 2:51:39 for an overall pace of 13:06 min/mile pace.  It was slower than my race 2 weeks ago by 14 minutes but considering Tuesday morning I wasn’t sure I’d even be able to run I was happy with it.
My only complaint about the race at all is the post-race set up.  They really needed to have port-a-potties at the finish line.  The nearest ones were outside the runner’s area so you would have to go past the medals, water, food, pictures, bag pick up, changing tents, and beer station before you could get there.  This is where I made my biggest mistake of the race (even bigger than leaving my charged battery in my checked bag).  I really had to go to the bathroom and had a one track mind to get there.  I couldn’t think of eating or drinking anything until I made it there.  I was certain if I did I would get sick so I skipped everything in my quest for a bathroom and so by the time I finally got there it was really too late.  It didn’t help that it was now after 1am I was physically exhausted.  By the time I fought my way back through the crowd to the gear pick up area I couldn’t stand up.  I was so dizzy and nauseous and exhausted.  I laid down on the ground for a minute and it is possible I fell asleep when a medical person came by.  I consented to go to the medical tent mainly because I needed the bathroom again and it was closer than going back out again to get to the non-medical tent port-a-potties.  They gave me some chewable Pepto which I proceeded to throw up almost immediately.  After I emptied the contents of my stomach I started to feel 100% better, got my color back and the dizziness went away.  I was still cold and tired but I no longer felt like I was going to fall down.  I changed out of my soaking wet shirt and left the medical tent.  It was 2:30 or so by the time I made it to Epcot (It might have been later as I know the course had completely closed before I left the medical tent - time didn't really exist to me at this moment).  I decided to skip the after party and just took the tram back to the car and drove back to my resort.  It was 3-3:30 am when I made it back to the resort and I was asleep almost immediately.

Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend - Part 2 The Day before and MVMCP

Friday – November 8th, 2013.

Today is the day.  I finally get on a plane and fly to Orlando for my race.  J  I got the kids ready for school, dropped my youngest off at school and headed to the airport.  My flight was uneventful which is how you would like a flight to be.  Knowing the Orlando airport like I do, I knew it would take a while to get my rental car and I was starving so I went ahead and got food before leaving the terminal and ate it in line for the rental car.  I was upgraded to a BMW X5 SUV.  It was a very nice SUV.  With my keys in hand I loaded up the BMW and headed to my resort.  This weekend I stayed at Vacation Villages @ Parkway.  I didn’t really explore the resort so I can’t speak to the amenities but the 1BR A type unit was quite nice.  It took me forever to figure out where to check in though.  It had a nice kitchen, king sized bed, pull out couch, very larger soaker jetted tub, large shower with good water pressure and everything was clean and modern feeling.  I basically dropped my stuff off, packed my park bag and headed out to the Magic Kingdom for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.
It was a little after 4 when I pulled into the parking lot.  Since I normally arrive at the MK before the park opens I forget sometimes how long it can take to get from the parking lot to the main gate.  I wasn’t about to walk in from the parking lot.  I knew I was in for more walking than was probably good for me the night before a race and I wanted to save a little extra wear and tear.  So I waited for the tram (I had just missed one) and at the Ticket and Transportation Center I noticed that they were putting everyone on the resort monorail.  Guessing that the Express wasn’t running right then I went down to the Ferry only to find they were running only 1 Ferry and it had just left.  At 4:40 I finally had my first glimpse of the castle as we sailed across the 7-seas Lagoon.  There are little Buoys (for lack of a better term) to guide the Ferry in on either side of the dock.  I am amazed at the # of people who throw change at those buoys.  I probably could pay for my next vacation with the change on the Buoy and that doesn’t include the ones that miss and are at the bottom of the Lagoon.

I make it through bag check, go to the party entrance and get my wrist band and head up Main Street.  I I love walking down Main Street, but right now I had a purpose.  I wanted to get to Splash Mountain before the sun went down.  I hadn’t ridden it in many years.  In 2009 when we were there it was too cold.  In 2012 the family rode it while I did the Keys to the Kingdom tour with my parents.  I wouldn’t give up the Keys tour for anything but by the time I had a chance to ride it the sun was down and it was too chilly to be wet.  In March 2013 Splash was close for refurbishment.  So I really wanted to ride Splash Mountain and took a bee-line over there.  Fortunately I was smart enough to put my rain jacket on before riding.  Somehow I ended up in a boat with no kids. I enjoyed riding Splash.  I wish there was a way they could remake Song of the South and remove the racial undertones (overtones) to it.  The story itself of Brer Rabbit is a good story but I digress.  I did find myself engineering an alternate ride where you could have an optional boat that didn’t take the water dive but did go through the dark ride part for people under 40”.  When I was younger I wanted to be an Imagineer (okay if I’m completely honest that is still my dream job) and I find myself designing/redesigning rides for Disney all the time in my head.
I checked the line for the Jingle Cruise and decided I’d wait until later in the day to try to ride it.  (I think it was +60 minutes at this point) and jumped in line for Pirates of the Caribbean instead.  This is another ride I’d missed last fall.  I was enjoying having time to do those things I just wasn’t able to for whatever reason.  The mermaid overlay was different. The people in the front of my boat were using their cell phones as a flashlight at this point in the ride so it was admittedly a bit of a distraction.  It’s been interesting to see the progression of Pirates over the years.  One of the Jack Sparrow models was so lifelike I almost though it was an actor who was going to jump out of the scene like in the Great Movie Ride (even though I know that was not going to happen).  I love Pirates of the Caribbean though.  It’s always been one of my favorites (I grew up going to Disneyland more frequently than Disney World so I’m always slightly disappointed there isn’t the drop in the ride though) possibly when I was little my preference was because the queue was inside and nice and cool on a hot summer day.  I enjoyed my trip down memory lane.

At this point it was starting to get close to time for Cinderella’s Wish (the evening Castle Lighting Show) so I headed towards the hub to see it.  The 5:40 Move it Shake it Celebrate it Parade was just passing by when I got there so I caught a glimpse of the parade and picked up my first Mickey Bar of the trip (I have a Mickey Bar addiction – it is probably a good thing you can’t buy them outside of Disney).  I was able to secure a pretty good spot for the Castle Lighting Show right on the hub in front of the Walt/Mickey statue.  Again this was something I missed last year so I enjoyed getting to watch it for this trip.

Its now about 6:15 and the non-party goers are starting to funnel out of Main Street so it is time for me to head deeper into the park to escape the crowds and get some dinner.  I head into Fantasyland and stop at Pinocchio Haus for a flat bread pizza.  I found a seat overlooking Small World and had fun waving back at the kids that would wave at the window as they sailed away on the “Happiest Cruise on Earth”  (Side note that sign always makes me laugh because I have to say an actual Disney Cruise is definitely a much happier cruise in my opinion but Small World was built long before DCL was created).  I finished up my dinner and walked into New Fantasyland.  I didn’t have a lot of time to explore the “non-attraction” areas on New Fantasyland last year so I poked my head into Gaston’s Tavern and Bonjour! Village Gifts (which has some beautiful and expensive things if you are a Beauty and the Beast Fan – I do not need Beauty and the Beast inspired China Dishes however so I did not purchase anything.  Minnie Mouse with a Belle Wig and dress on looked quite odd too by the way.)  I continued my way along New Fantasyland around the back side of the future Mine Train. It felt like they opened up the walkway some since last year so it didn’t seem as crowded with stroller parking etc.  I think there was a new fresh food stand and Disney Vacation Club Booth across from Ariel’s Grotto.
I continued on towards Storybook Circus and took a spin on Dumbo the Flying Elephant! It really is a requirement to ride Dumbo at least once on every visit.  Since I didn’t have the kids with me I did not stop in the play area tonight though.

I was going to ride Barnstormer just for fun, but it was temporarily closed for some reason (there were several uniformed security people mulling about and headed in that way so I’m assuming something must have happened – I don’t know if it reopened later as I didn’t get back there again).  I also wandered into The Big Top Souvenir Shop.
It was now right at 7pm and the Christmas Characters started to take their positions.  I didn’t stop for any Characters but I did see Donald, Daisy and Scrooge McDuck in Storybook Circus as I walked out.  I took a spin on the Mad Tea Party before heading into Tomorrowland.  In Tomorrowland I watched part of the “Totally Tomorrowland Christmas Show” and danced with Goofy and Pluto for a bit in the Club 626 Character Dance Party.  For the first time I could remember there was no line for Astro Orbiter so I decided to take a spin on the rockets.  They go much faster than Dumbo and being up high in Tomorrowland provides a different perspective on the world.  After exiting Astro Orbiter I picked up my Space Ranger License battling Zurg on the Buzz Lightyear Ranger Spin.  Having covered everything I wanted to do in Tomorrowland for this trip, I headed across the park back to Adventureland.
Moving across Main Street I think I had to show my Christmas Party Band every 20 steps.  They were really trying to move everyone who wasn’t a party goer out of the park (I’d had to show it for all the rides and attractions in Tomorrowland and Fantasyland too including the bathroom but they were getting serious about it on Main Street).  With the non-party goers out of the park and a lot of the party goers lining up for the early Parade the line for Jingle Cruise was showing at 20 minutes and looked much shorter than it had been all evening so I hopped in line.  (Not quite literally but close).  They added some decorations in the queue and the base camp had Christmas lights on it.  All the boats had new Christmas Themed names and Trader Sam was all decked out for Christmas.  The jokes were all Christmas Themed as well.  I would have thought they would have added a few more decorations throughout the ride as part of the Christmas overlay, but it was fun.

I wandered around Adventure land, picked up some free Hot Chocolate and Cookies from one of the treat spots, walked by Jack Sparrow and headed towards Main Street.  I found a nice bench next to Crystal Palace and the Baby Center to sit for a bit and rest my feet (I was trying to be mindful of the fact that I was running a half marathon in about 25 -1/2 hours or so) to wait for the first parade to end.  I positioned myself well at the end of the parade to get a good spot for the Castle Projection Show and Holiday Wishes Fireworks Spectacular.  I was in the center of Main Street at the street between Casey’s Corner and the Plaza.  They keep this walkway open for people to cross the park so there was at least 10-15 feet between us and the next group of people.  I put down my towel and held took a seat right there waiting for the show to begin at 8:45pm.  I’d seen part of the Projection show last year but wasn’t ever in a good position to really appreciate it.  I was blown away with what they can do with technology these days.  At one point it really did look like the castle was lifting off into space.  I love that one of the overlays is the old pink birthday cake castle (that really was wrong and should never have happened by the way).  It makes me smile to see it amongst the other images.  There is a 5 minute break between the end of the projection show and the fireworks at 9:30 so I just hung around and waited for the show to start.  Standing where I was you really feel surrounded at times by the fireworks.  It really is the perfect place to get the full effects of the firework.  Holiday Wishes was beautiful.

After Wishes I moved up closer to the Castle Stage for the Celebrate the Season show at 10:05pm.  I found a spot right one the curb so I was perfectly positioned to watch the Celebrate the Season show and then turn around and sit on the curb to watch the Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas Parade at 10:30pm.

When the parade ended you could really feel people moving out of the park.  I want back into Fantasyland and took a ride on the Carousel and Winnie the Pooh (both are also must do’s for any trip) and walked by the Seven Dwarfs.  I headed back towards the Big Top Souvenirs in Storybook Circus to buy the Mickey Crocs I’d seen earlier for the girls.  After I finished my purchases I rode the Voyage of the Little Mermaid Ride.  I was the only one on the ride for at least 20 clams in either direction.  I really do enjoy the ride but I can’t help but feel there was so much more they could have done with it.  I had a concept Little Mermaid Ride in my head for years and it just doesn’t compare.

After I exited the Little Mermaid I figured I had time for one more ride before the park closed and decided to try Haunted Mansion.  I love that ride.  I found myself looking for things we learned about in the Keys to the Kingdom tour as we rode.  I exited the Haunted Mansion and to my surprise I was able to just sneak into the queue for It’s a Small World before the stroke of Midnight so I was able to ride it too.  When Small World ended the party was officially closed now.  I stopped for a restroom break in Rapunzel’s Tower Bathrooms (probably the best themed bathroom I’ve ever seen) and headed through the Castle toward Main Street and the exit.  With so few people around I twirled and danced through the Castle.  It’s fun to be completely silly and carefree sometimes.

I exited the park and took the Ferry back across the Seven Seas Lagoon to the Ticket and Transportation Center.  It is never as much fun to take the Ferry to the car as it is to the park.  I boarded the Villain’s tram back to Hook 90 and drove back to my resort.  It was a late night but I didn’t have to set an alarm to get up early the next morning so I could sleep as much as I wanted.  (Famous last words)
